Vitamins

Vitamins are organics molecules created by living organisms like plants, bacteria and animals. Our bodies need them for growth and longevity, as they ultimately impact every aspect of health.

Medical science has identified thirteen vitamins essential to health. "Essential" in this context not only means we need them to enjoy good health, but also that our body cannot manufacture them and therefore we must get them from our diet or supplements.

Folic acid is the most common form of folate supplements. Once ingested, your body is supposed to convert folic acid, a synthetic version of folate, into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, or 5-MTHF. But research shows that many people lack sufficient activity of the enzyme that's necessary to convert folic acid to 5-MTHF.1-3 A more useful approach is to take 5-MTHF directly.4-6

    5-MTHF, homocysteine & cardiovascular health

Folate helps maintain healthy homocysteine levels already within the normal range. By helping to inhibit excess homocysteine, folate supports healthy levels of this important cardiovascular health biomarker.1 And 5-MTHF has been shown to be more bioavailable than folic acid in some studies.5,7

    5-MTHF, homocysteine & cognitive health

5-MTHF's greater bioavailability is especially important for people who don't have enough activity of the enzyme necessary to convert folic acid to its biologically active form. Since people with elevated homocysteine levels have a greater risk of cognitive decline, the increased efficiency of 5-MTHF in supporting healthy folate status is especially crucial for aging individuals. 8,9

Take alone or with B12 for enhanced effect

The RDA for folate for non-pregnant or lactating adults is 400 mcg a day, but this high-potency formula provides 8500 mcg of this super-bioavailable form of folate. For even greater health benefits, take 5-MTHF folate with methylcobalamin (the active form of vitamin B12), vitamin B6 and/or riboflavin.

Vitamin B12 is good for you. But many people don’t get sufficient B12 from their diets alone. Reasons range from age-related insufficiency to dietary intake: B12 comes primarily from animal sources, so those following a vegetarian diet may not get enough.

Our new B12 Elite combines two types of cobalamin: adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin. These are “active” forms—meaning your body can make use of them right away.

    Adenosylcobalamin helps preserve neuronal function

Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2) is a type of enzyme that modifies other proteins by adding phosphate groups. Inhibiting the activity of this enzyme has been associated with helping to preserve neuronal tissue.

A series of preclinical studies has shown that the adenosylcobalamin form of B12 can inhibit the activity of multiple LRRK2 variants in neurons by decreasing phosphorylation (the addition of phosphate groups to amino acids).

These studies found that adenosylcobalamin helped regulate healthy release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in cognitive functions such as motor control, arousal, reinforcement and reward.

    A cofactor for energy metabolism

Adenosylcobalamin is active in the mitochondria, the powerhouses of your cells. It’s required as a cofactor for the synthesis of succinyl-CoA, a compound that supports cellular energy metabolism.

Methylcobalamin for cellular health & beyond

Methylcobalamin is another neurologically active form of B12 (though in different ways than adenosylcobalamin). Methylcobalamin supports the central nervous system, and it’s essential for the replication and growth of cells.

Methylcobalamin helps to maintain already healthy homocysteine levels. Inhibiting excess levels of this compound is key to maintaining healthy cardiovascular and neurological function.

B12 for a healthy brain and more

This B12 formula combines methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin to offer optimal cognitive support. Want the health benefits of the full range of the B vitamins? We also offer our BioActive Complete B-Complex formula: a wide-spectrum of B vitamins for whole-body health.
