Choosing an Electrolyte Supplement

What Makes a Good Electrolyte Formula?

Electrolytes have become one of the most popular categories in the supplement world, but not all electrolyte products are created equal. With so many powders, packets, and drinks available, it can be difficult to know what actually makes one formula better than another. A good electrolyte formula is not just about having a long ingredient list or a flashy flavor. It comes down to the right balance of minerals, appropriate amounts, and a formula designed for how your body actually uses electrolytes.

What are electrolytes?

In the simplest terms, electrolytes are minerals that conduct an electrical charge when dissolved in water/fluids. Our body uses this natural property to power the electrical signals of our brain and nervous system, supporting our health in numerous ways.

The main electrolytes in the body include sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. We naturally obtain these minerals through our diet, but we can lose them through sweat, especially during exercise, physical labor, hot weather, or other situations where we lose significant fluids. While sodium often leads the discussion, its important to note that our body requires all these minerals in the right amounts for optimal health.

So while water is of course a critical aspect of hydration, we require our electrolyte minerals to be truly hydrated and healthy!

Choosing an electrolyte supplement

When trying to find the right electrolyte product for your needs, we often find its smart to start with three areas of focus. The sodium/salt content, amount of sugar and the "other ingredients".

The sodium content of your electrolyte supplement is arguably the top priority when choosing a product. For those who are less active and/or sensitive to salt, a lower sodium product is likely a good starting point. For more active individuals or those experiencing greater fluid loss (sweating, urination, etc.), higher salt content can be desirable. At HealthWay, we offer products with as little as 100mg of sodium up to 1000mg, ensuring we've got the electrolyte supplement for you!

Minding the sugar content can also be an important factor. Outside of more pronounced dehydration or intense athletic activity, most of us would do well to avoid electrolyte products with added sugar (yes we're looking at you Gatorade!). When warranted though, sugar can help support hydration by increasing sodium uptake to better support rapid rehydration.

Our final category, formula quality and preferences, is meant to capture all the other things that can sneak into your electrolyte product. For some, they're looking for a super clean product with minimal no zero extra ingredients. For others, they're wanting to avoid specific additives, whether it be the aforementioned sugar or other sweeteners, how intense the flavoring is, or perhaps whether coloring agents like red #40 were used. Know what you're after, and check the "other ingredients" section of the label!

When to use electrolytes

When you haven't taken in enough of these essential minerals, an electrolyte supplement may be warranted. Be on guard when you're exposed to hot environments, losing fluids due to illness, increased urination or during extended exercise. Electrolytes can be a great travel support supplement, helping to keep you hydrated during long flights or when dealing with travelers diarrhea. While we should always strive to get adequate nutrition through our diet, life can catch us off guard sometimes. Electrolytes can be a quick solution to getting our hydration back on track.

Getting the most out of your electrolytes

When we need a hydration boost, we want to ensure our efforts will be effective. It's important to properly dilute your powdered electrolyte supplement, be sure to follow the instructions on the minimum amount of water to mix them with. It is possible to use too little water and undermine your hydration goals, so stick with the recommended amount  or err on the higher side, usually 16oz of water or more. It's also important to note your body prefers slow and steady hydration, so sipping beats chugging when it comes to getting the most out of your electrolytes!

Finally, remember that hydration isn't something to think about only after you feel thirsty. Drinking fluids consistently throughout the day and replacing electrolytes when circumstances call for it is a simple, yet effective way to support your body's normal hydration and performance. Remember, talk to your doctor before making changes to your health practices and give the salt content of your chosen electrolyte product extra consideration.
