Iodine is essential for thyroid health

Iodine is a trace element necessary for the production of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).¹ Iodine is abundant in seafood and sea vegetables, but not everyone likes or has access to marine foods, and vegan diets sometimes lack adequate iodine.²

Commercial salt makers add iodine to table salt to make up for this potential deficiency. However, we now know the health risks of eating too much salt, so health-conscious people may miss out on an easy source of iodine. Vitamin K1 and two different types of K2

Vitamin K helps inhibit calcium buildup in your arteries while promoting healthy calcium absorption into your bone matrix.³ K1 is the most common form of vitamin K in the diet, coming primarily from leafy green vegetables—though vitamin K1 isn’t well absorbed from these foods.

Vitamin K2 is found in cheese, eggs and fermented soybeans. It has been shown to be more bioavailable than K1 and to remain active in the body far longer. The MK-4 and MK-7 forms of vitamin K2 also provide important benefits but have different tissue distributions and bioavailability, so it’s important to take both.^4,5 This formula contains both forms of vitamin K2.

Adenosylcobalamin helps preserve neuronal function

Leucine-Rich Repeat Kinase 2 (LRRK2) is a type of enzyme that modifies other proteins by adding phosphate groups. Inhibiting the activity of this enzyme has been associated with helping to preserve neuronal tissue.

A series of preclinical studies has shown that the adenosylcobalamin form of B12 can inhibit the activity of multiple LRRK2 variants in neurons by decreasing phosphorylation (the addition of phosphate groups to amino acids).

These studies found that adenosylcobalamin helped regulate healthy release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in cognitive functions such as motor control, arousal, reinforcement and reward.

A cofactor for energy metabolism

Adenosylcobalamin is active in the mitochondria, the powerhouses of your cells. It’s required as a cofactor for the synthesis of succinyl-CoA, a compound that supports cellular energy metabolism.

Methylcobalamin is another neurologically active form of B12 (though in different ways than adenosylcobalamin). Methylcobalamin supports the central nervous system, and it’s essential for the replication and growth of cells.
